Where the Savannah Meets the Sea: Your Ultimate 2-Day Journey to Saadani National Park

Architecting Your Journey Site is under development

“There is a place in East Africa where a lion can stroll along the beach while dolphins leap offshore just metres away. A sanctuary known only to the most discerning explorers. We will take you there.” - Karibu Zanzibar Agency
Imagine standing on the deck of a private vessel as the sun rises over the Indian Ocean, leaving the amber glow of Nungwi behind. Ahead lies the Tanzanian mainland—not the crowded safari circuits, but a realm of quiet mangrove estuaries, ephemeral white sandbanks, and a protected coastline where elephants and lions wander to the water’s edge.
Welcome to Saadani National Park. Just offshore, suspended above an extraordinary coral reef, floats Maziwe Island Marine Reserve one of East Africa’s oldest and most ecologically precious sanctuaries.
This bespoke two-day itinerary, curated exclusively by Karibu Zanzibar, seamlessly weaves together open-water navigation, elite wildlife safaris, world-class snorkeling, and profound cultural immersion.
East Africa boasts world-renowned safari parks and legendary island escapes. Rarely, however, do they exist in a single breath. Saadani National Park is the only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa sharing a direct boundary with the Indian Ocean.
No other destination offers the luxury of a dawn game drive along the shore, a private gourmet picnic on a vanishing sandbank, and an afternoon diving alongside hawksbill turtles in a virtually uncharted coral garden. There are no traffic jams of safari vehicles here; just wild, spacious, breathing Africa.
Your journey commences in the early morning from Nungwi or Kendwa Beach, where a private speedboat awaits. The two-hour crossing of the Indian Ocean is an adventure in itself, often escorted by surfing dolphins or, in season, the distant breach of a humpback whale.
Saadani’s 1,062 square kilometers encompass coastal savannah, ancient forests, and ocean beachfront. Four of Africa’s Big Five—lions, elephants, leopards, and Cape buffaloes—thrive here. Witness herds of elephants bathing in the surf or Maasai giraffes striding through grasslands against the shimmering backdrop of the Indian Ocean. The park also shelters rare Roosevelt sable antelopes, Colobus monkeys, and diverse plains game.
The Wami River is Saadani’s beating heart. A guided private boat safari along this slow-moving, mangrove-lined waterway offers unhurried, intimate encounters with massive Nile crocodiles, resting hippos, and swinging monkeys. The birdlife is exceptional, making it a haven for ornithologists.
Approximately 20 miles offshore lies Mafui Sandbank, a pristine atoll that materializes only at low tide. Karibu Zanzibar guests can snorkel directly over vibrant hard corals and swim alongside green turtles. Lunch is an elegant, fully catered affair served under the open sky on a private stretch of sand.
Saadani represents one of the last significant green turtle nesting sites on the mainland coast. Between July and November, guests can partake in a guided, conservation-led walking visit to observe these magnificent creatures emerging from the surf to lay their eggs—a profoundly moving, unscripted wildlife encounter.
On your second morning, your journey continues north to the waters off Pangani. Here lies Maziwe Island Marine Reserve, an extraordinary tidal island that surfaces at low tide and vanishes at high tide.
Established in 1975, Maziwe hosts over 425 species of fish, 35 genera of corals, and an endemic shrimp species found nowhere else on earth. The density and health of this ecosystem make it a global marvel, yet it remains gloriously empty of mass tourism.
Whether you are a beginner wading into the crystal-clear shallows or an advanced diver exploring complex reef drop-offs, Maziwe is unparalleled. Encounter moray eels, stingrays, octopuses, and schools of vibrant reef fish. For certified divers, the site operates at depths of 10 to 25 meters, often with visibility extending beyond 20 meters.
There are no beach clubs or crowds on Maziwe. There is only warm white sand and the gentle sound of the Indian Ocean. Karibu Zanzibar provides a luxurious seafood picnic served under a makeshift sail shade. Guests can also enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or observing the thriving seabird colonies that temporarily claim the island.
